In 2023, applications for inventions at the German Patent and Trademark Office (GPTO) increased significantly. Compared to the previous year, the GPTO recorded a 3.4 % increase in patent applications from Germany.

The President of the GPTO, Eva Schewior, recently commented on this in the Chamber’s circular as followed:

“The fact that the innovation activity of German companies is noticeably increasing, is an encouraging sign in economically difficult times. Protected innovations strengthen the international competitiveness of companies and are a driver of prosperity and progress in our society.”

In view of the fact that the figures were declining at the beginning of 2020, this is a positive signal for Germany as a business location.
